What is the purpose of a traditional field guide? To name, to give order to the wildness and unpredictability of nature. To identify the medicinal and the poisonous. To distinguish one species from another.
Plants have also been used as symbols to tell a larger story, such as the lilies of annunciation scenes, the carnations growing where Mary’s tears fell, the speckled tulips of vanitas still lifes.
Instead of a scientific study of plants, this is a field guide to metaphor. I work from life, studying the textures, colors, and shadows, but I let emotion and intuition take the lead. Each title connects the plant to a feeling, an action, or an object. Each plant is removed from the context of a scene in my life, and instead of giving order or a framework, this field guide celebrates mystery.
